Chapter 3.5: Character Portraits
In the post beforehand, I mentioned on showing you guys the on my process in creating the sprite assets. Before I do that I need to talk on the character portraits that I have done. Why I focus on this first is because I will need a reference for my character sprite later. Without further ado, Leggo.

As you can see above, this is the moodboard I did for my character portrait references. I was focusing more on the Visual Novel approach of doing the cut scenes, where it will show the interactions between characters in between game. What I was focusing here is the expressions the characters show when they interact in the story.
Another few references that I looked at are the style that I want to approach in designing the characters. The above references are focused on approaching JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Games) style. I was interested in the two tone color approach that they did and decided to use that in my character as well. The other references are shown below :
The first reference here is approaching towards anime-ish style. Then I start searching for any local styles that were used in designing Hang Tuah or his brothers. There weren't much, which can see here that the folktale is not appreciate much in our community. Although there are a few online, the characters they designed look too serious their color tone were a lot for me to design. An example is shown below
I had a discussion with a friend of mine and she helped me out in choosing the right style for the characters. It took 2 weeks to work on it but it works out well. Below are the finalized portraits that will be used in the game
Final Outcome (Portraits)
The colors were specifically planned to be this way because :
1) I want it to be different from the usual colors people use to design these characters (green palette, yellow palette, except The Sultan, I need his yellow color to show royalty lol)
2) The colors will be used in designing the sprite and it will stand out in the game's environment.
Aaaand that's it for this post. I'm gonna talk on designing Jebat's sprite in the next post :D
