Chapter 2.5 : Case Study 1

During my research on this topic, I realized that there are a few cases that I stumbled on in the past that reflects and, in a way, inspired me to choose this topic. In this post, I will talk on the first case :

CASE STUDY 1 : Final Fantasy 15 by Square Enix

Final Fantasy XV is an open world action role-playing video game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One home consoles. The game is the fifteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series, and was released worldwide on November 29, 2016. The game features an open-world environment and action-based battle system, incorporating the ability to switch weapons and other elements such as vehicle travel and camping.

i have been playing every Final Fantasy installment and was really hype in playing this one. When I haven't started playing the game, there were news all over my social medias saying that the game has a city where it was inspired by Malaysian culture. To my surprise it was true. I then checked back into the game's development crew and found out that there was really a Malaysian game designer who heads the "Culture" development team for the game.

As a lead game designer for one of the world's biggest video game developers, Wan Hazmer's day-to-day job at Square Enix involves the imagining of fantastic worlds. It was a long road for him, as I read through his interviews and he mentions that he had to go Japan and master the language first in one and a half year. Once mastered, he wrote a 10 page game proposal to Square Enix, in Japanese, and was then recruited.

Wan Hazmer has mentioned in his interviews that he tries his best to implement Malaysian culture into the game. He wanted to put famous ghosts such as the Pontianak or Toyol into the game but was rejected as they were not suited for the game's theme. Nevertheless, he then implement famous food culture from Malaysia such as the Mamak culture, where in the game players reach at the fictional city called Lestellum and gets to buy Roti Canai or Satay to replenish your health. Also, the inn where the character rests is designed based on the architectural designs of buildings from Taiping, Perak.

The more I watch his interviews and his achievements, the more I am inspired to become a game designer. Malaysian has a rich diversity in cultures, and its a shame to not introduce it to the world. As a game designer, I can follow how Wan Hazmer's implement these cultures and remix it with other cultures to create a unique environment. If given a chance, I thought of creating a game solely based on Malaysia itself but with elements like how the top guns in the gaming industry would to to promote their culture.
