Chapter 2.5 : Research Results Part 1

In the last 2 posts, I listed down a few research tasks needed to confirm on the issue that I proposed. During the weekends, I managed to collect information given from a few tasks I had done along with adding more tasks that I think is suitable for research.

1) To research in a few bookstores and check out if there's anymore books that are related to the Malaysian folklore.

During the weekends, I managed to check out a 6 small bookstores located in Shah Alam and in Rawang. Out of 6, only 1 bookstore in Rawang has a children's section where a few Malaysian folklore's book were stacked. I did not manage to take a picture but I can show you the books that were shown online that was the same as what I found :

Malay Folklore Storybooks published by Kohwai & Young Publication (Malaysia)

2) To have a casual conversation with my tuition students and my little brother's friends and ask them on Hang Tuah.

Last Friday, I had a tuition in Bukit Beruntung, Rawang with 15 students which ranges from Primary 2 to Form 3. During break sessions, I would sit down with 2 or 3 of them and have a casual talk. I chose Hang Tuah and Sang Kancil as my topic when I talk to them.

The questions were :

1) Kamu semua kenal tak Hang Tuah atau Sang Kancil?
(Do you guys know Hang Tuah and Sang Kancil?)

2) Agak-agak cerita mana yang kamu semua suka tentang Hang Tuah atau Sang
   Kancil?
(Which chapter do you all think you like on Hang Tuah or Sang Kancil?)

3) Cikgu kat sekolah ada sebut tak tentang cerita-cerita legenda melayu ni?
(Does any of your teachers ever tell you the tales of the Malaysian legends?)

4) Buku-buku cerita dekat perpustakaan sekolah ada tak buku-buku macam ni?
(Does the storybooks at your school's library have any kind of books like these?)

5) Buku novel/kesusasteraan tahun ni ada kaitan tak dengan legenda melayu?
    (Form 3)
(Does the novels/literature books this year has anything related to the Malaysian
    Legends?)

I managed to ask 3  students on the fifth question as I only have two Form 3 students and Literature is already introduced in their syllabus from Form 1.

The answers to the questions i asked them were :

Question 1 : No                 (10 students)
                    Yes or maybe (5 students)

Question 2 : The fight between Hang Jebat and Hang Tuah                     (4 students)
The tale of Sang Kancil tricks the Crocodile (Sang Buaya)    (1 student)

Question 3 : No  (15 students)

Question 4 : Yes      (3 students)
                    No       (9 students)
                    Maybe (3 students)

Question 5 : No (3 students)

From the results here, I can say that students ranged Primary 2 - Primary 6 has little knowledge on the Malaysian Folklore. Most of them know other characters such as Upin-Ipin, Naruto or Doraemon. Reason why is when I ask them where they knew this characters, they mention of watching these characters on TV shows on local channel such as TV3, NTV7 or TV9. Based on my experience, these channels open these shows at around noon or evening after the students return back from school.

For the 5 students, 3 of them were Form 3 students while the other 2 are Primary 6. 4 of them mentioned that they knew the tales of Hang Tuah from the classical movie  directed and acted by the late P.Ramlee. 1 of them knew the tale of Sang Kancil as she once read a book about it when she was young.
